I'm not sure what you mean by "make it work" (Derive psychic benefit? Continue the practices despite doubts?) I have heard the word "observant" used to describe someone who participates in a religion without believing. There can still be psychic benefits from community membership and directly from religious practices. It's also common for people to be observant for decades, so it's not necessarily a temporary state. Not sure if this is what you're looking for.
