It's true that it's easy to forget one's early challenges, but we have empirical support that design decisions such as the staging area are objectively difficult for beginners to adopt. See https://investigating-archiving-git.gitlab.io/ https://investigating-archiving-git.gitlab.io/. Mercurial, of course, doesn't have a staging area.
- acdha 4y agoSure, but the staging area isn’t something you need to understand deeply to use Git since most common tools abstract it. Given how much more frequently the researchers’ subjects mentioned it, the big win would appear to be avoiding merge conflicts and better tools for reconciling them.
