3k young children accidentally ate weed edibles in 2021, study finds

- jepler 4y agoIn 2020 there were 23.4 million children under the age of 6 in the US (source: https://www.statista.com/statistics/457786/number-of-children-in-the-us-by-age/ https://www.statista.com/statistics/457786/number-of-childre...) Combining this with the 3000 children figure gives a rate of approximately 0.13 per 1,000 per year. In 2021, the U.S. Poison Control Centers reported that the rate of all reported poison exposures for under-6 was 37.9/1,000. This makes exposure to weed edibles account for about 0.34% of all reported poison exposures for under-6es. It's also much lower than, say, the number of children injured in automobile accidents over the same period (though higher than the number that died) I do admit to being a little distressed at the idea of an under-6 child being admitted to the ICU and put on a ventilator, due to accidental THC ingestion. (also have you tasted those things? it's hard to imagine a kid wouldn't just spit it back out as soon as they tried it)
