I wasn’t able to glean this from the article: -which- site? Is the number cited the unique members across every federated server? Or is it just mastodon.social? Is there a way to determine membership across the fediverse?

Not sure but I recalled having saw a meme (on Twitter, of course) that Mastodon boast the 2nd and 3rd largest federated groups as being infested with child porn. Hey, it's probably just a meme. I've no inclination to join Mastodon (due to my prior analysis of its network protocol), much less able to verify that Twitter meme claim. But I chuckled as I read about an infosec group on federated (but unrelated to #2/#3) Mastodon.
