Ask HN: Why not bomb the k2 serac to make climbing k2 more safe?
- nullish_signal 4y ago"And all the Hills shall be made Plain, and all of the Valleys raised up..."
- pythops 4y agohow that is related to a specific problem which is the problem the serac in k2 which make it dangerous ?
- nullish_signal 4y agoI see it as a non-specific Allegory for the "Flattening" of all Achievement and Suffering. Our world of Harsh Light and Chaotic Shadow, reduced to a Uniform and Inoffensive Grey. I was very amused by your question about reducing portions of a Dangerous Mountain to Rubble.
- bell-cot 4y agoAny reason to suspect that "make climbing K2 safer" could be in the (say) top 10,000 national priorities for China or Pakistan? Is there some broad public consensus that doing that would "fix the problem", for politicians to enjoy the resulting limelight? Vs. being dangerous, expensive, and stirring up far more controversy than the current status quo?
- pythops 4y ago> Is there some broad public consensus that doing that would "fix the problem" I don't know, that's why I'm asking here. Probably "bombing" the serac would create more problems but I'm just curious why it's not done, and what are those potential new problems
- tw98521358 4y agoWhy? Isn’t the point of climbing k2 because it’s stupidly dangerous?
- pythops 4y agohahah good one well, the serac makes it dangerous but even without the serac it's still dangerous for many reasons. But the serac does not add anything in term of difficulty (steppy terain already, lack of oxygen ...)
- rsclient 4y agoWhy not just rename [Haystack Mountain](https://usabynumbers.com/mountains-in-connecticut/ https://usabynumbers.com/mountains-in-connecticut/) in Connecticut (USA) to K2? That way climbing K2 will be as easy as a car ride!
- pythops 4y agoSerac does not make k2 difficult, it just makes it dangerous (from camp4 to summit only)
