The real reason: rent seeking from aggressive law firms looking for people to sue.
- chiefalchemist 4y agoWell, it is the law. And it's hard to do your "pursuit of happiness" when you can't actually use the internet. In a fair and just society (where equality and the individual are high priorities), it hardly seems like too much to ask. Finally, the number of people using AT is significant. Imagine saying, "We want to serve everyone, except those with red hair." How would that go over? Red heads might actually be an even smaller subset.
- brightball 4y agoThe biggest problem last I saw was the difficulty in objectively evaluating it. It’s not like putting in a ramp that meets certain specifications. It’s covering every single aspect of everything you do on the internet. One of these firms went after a company because a video on their website didn’t have captions. I’m a strong accessibility advocate and have been for a long time, but we need clear “minimum” guidelines for people to understand what is good enough. The alternative will be people simply taking down business websites because the liability outweighs the benefit.
