Companies are taking a liberal interpretation of CA pay transparency law

- falcolas 4y agoA side effect of salaries being based on your last salary more than the job requirements.
- smnrchrds 4y agoIf they are going to so flagrantly ignore the spirit of the law, why not go all the way in? Instead of 90k to 900k, they should just write minimum wage to 1 trillion dollars. It would be more honest to their intent that way.
- subharmonicon 4y agoRecent HN discussion of a Netflix post with $90k to $900k salary range: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34268691 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34268691

- fungiblecog 4y agoStupid law. The only way to get pay transparency is to publish actual salaries. but we can't have that because... privacy. funny how privacy is really important when it protects corporations

- _8j50 4y agoCouldn't this easily be enforced? Ask them to explain their requirements for the role and what qualifications would be worth the max pay and how someone who qualifies for the min pay can reasonably attain those qualifications. And if it is reasonably attainable, anyone who qualified can sue them. If it isn't then it is sort of a conspiracy to defraud the public at large isn't it? Might even have criminal implications if they deliberately lied for profit I'd think. I think they're waiting to get sued so the courts legislate the limits because the law itself does not define any. Would be awesome if someone asked $900k and sued them.
- killingtime74 4y agoIf you read the law than you would understand, even if you win that lawsuit, you don’t magically get the job and pay. The company simply pays a small fine (to the government).
- _8j50 4y agoBeing able to take them to court and pay lawyers alone might dissuade them.
- PenguinCoder 4y agoShould be the range of salaries and that the company is _currently paying_ for those titles/roles. As in, if the upper range is $900k, prove to me that a person, in that role, is working at your company right now, making that. If you can't, that's a lie about the salary range. Update it.
- killingtime74 4y agocan’t they just say it’s a new position?
