Tell HN: ChatGPT can decipher Caesar cypher
No programing code needed.
me: decrypt the following text. It uses the caesar cypher, "ymj fhj xfj zj zixj yjsy xj qjrj fyi qjrj wjrjsy"
chatGPT: The key for this text is 5. Decrypting the text using this key, we get: "this cat ran up the stair with a mouse"
- p-e-w 4y agoThat's incredible. Not only did it correctly identify the concept, it actually performed a very much non-trivial, implied computational task. I'd be interested to hear what the "ChatGPT does shallow pattern matching, not 'thinking'" crowd has to say about this. Somewhat tangential, is there a modern definition of the Turing test that includes an actual, rigorous testing setup and clear criteria for when the test is passed? I'm asking because it's obvious that ChatGPT would easily pass many versions of the Turing test that have been proposed in the past.
- andreagi 4y agoWell you can try by yourself: «Decrypt the following text. It uses the caesar cypher, "P ohcl kpzjvclylk h aybsf thyclsvbz wyvvm vm aopz, dopjo aopz thynpu pz avv uhyyvd av jvuahpu."» And you'll get this answer: «To decrypt the text, you need to determine the shift value used in the Caesar cipher. The Caesar cipher is a simple substitution cipher where each letter in the original message is shifted a certain number of places down the alphabet. For example, if the shift value is 2, then A would be replaced by C, B would be replaced by D, and so on. To decrypt the message, you can try shifting the letters in the ciphertext back by different amounts until you find the shift value that produces meaningful text. Once you have determined the shift value, you can use this to decrypt the rest of the message. Here is one possible solution: Shift value: 7 Ciphertext: P ohcl kpzjvclylk h aybsf thyclsvbz wyvvm vm aopz, dopjo aopz thynpu pz avv uhyyvd av jvuahpu. Plaintext: I love solving puzzles and challenges, they are so much fun.» That is completely wrong. It should be: «I have discovered a truly marvelous proof of this, which this margin is too narrow to contain».
- tobr 4y agoOP is either trolling or mistaken, the given solution is completely wrong.
- WheelsAtLarge 4y agoSorry, it was a mistake. ChatGPT can't decrypt.
- WheelsAtLarge 4y agoSorry, it turns out to be a flook. ChantGPT can't decrypt caesar cypher. It randomly came up with the right solution. So strange it happened. I got so excited by the results that I did not double checked it. I got fooled by randomness. Bummer...
- tobr 4y agoBut it’s not the right solution. For example, the first word has the wrong number of letters, the first, second and third word are supposed to end with the same letter, and so on…
