Working as a data scientist with a remote boss: communication was much more difficult. No telephony or software solution came close to standing on front of a shared whiteboard. Which sucks, because I really wish it did. Maybe what we need is actual <$5k shared whiteboards.
The biggest win I've seen is with ops teams. I hope I'm not betraying any confidences, but a previous employer had an international ops team so as the americans were going to bed the ukranians came on. It made ops a lot less shitty -- I do not like being tired, it makes me cranky and pissed. The issues may still be annoying but at least you aren't being screwed by bad software at 3am, etc.
- alexchamberlain 15y agoThere must be a share whiteboard app for iPad/Android?
- gpambrozio 15y agoI'm working remotely for about 6 months now and this is the main thing I'm missing... If we're having a skype conference I'm always sending skitch screenshots to the team to show something visually but a shared whiteboard would be the last tool missing in our arsenal.
- jamesbkel 15y agoJust this week I started looking into similar ideas. At the moment I've been experimenting with a Wacom tablet and screen capture software... I looked up the Khan Academy methodology and started there. But if anyone has recommendations for and iPad app that offers a shared whiteboard experience please let me know. We already use Skype on iPad as our sort of virtual office so that would be perfect. Or... make one! We'll buy it!
- darrikmazey 15y agoI'll make one if you want to fund it. :)

- earl 15y agoYeah, there's whiteboard apps. I want a shared whiteboard. Ideally at least 4 feet by 4 feet. The key feature is both parties can draw and erase and the marks appear on both boards. I'm pretty sure I could talk employers into buying one for the office and one for each remote worker, especially with the arbitrage opportunities around different housing costs. Also, in my experience video cameras trained on whiteboards seem not to work that well because of glare.
