Science confirms it: Websites do all look the same
- WheelsAtLarge 4y agoI worked for a company that created sites that followed the customer's wishes to a T. We would interview the customer and they would tell us the content and the navigation. We catered to people that had a very strong opinion of what they thought the site should look like. We had in house designers that made the whole site look very pretty. They loved the experimentation and freedom of design. We ended up with sites that were very innovative, pretty and, ultimately, useless. They were hard to use so people would get lost very easily. They spent very little time using them. It was a wasted time and effort for all involved. Those that still have a site have replaced their original site with a more standard site. There is an absolute reason why sites have a sameness about them and that's because people don't want to relearn a site every time. It's a waste of time and ultimately it's a waste for the creator. It comes down to function over design. Experimentation and design innovation is nice to play with but it's not worth putting over the user's needs and their expectations.
