    A lot of economists, if current policy and politics are not considered, are in favor of a consumption tax and no income tax / deductions. It hugely simplifies and balances things. The problem is changing the system and communicating to the public why this is a better way forward, not to mention the entrenched interest in keeping things the way they are, for those who benefit from the current system.
