I do similar to this when I am learning something new. Case in point, I'm learning Go. Instead of writing ugly code and learning from that, I read and read and read trying to absorb how to write "idiomatic" Go. Eventually, I stop. So, with Go, I'll eventually stop, write bad, non-idiomatic code while I'm learning, then I'll eventually write better code. Not sure why I do this, nobody is going to see the crappy learner projects. I don't put that on github or anything.
