I joined a really great (tm) super awesome tech company as a remote worker.
They had zero understanding of my skills, I was never integrated into anything, most of them forgot I existed, left out of key meetings and my boss never advocated for me.
I have extremely unique and advanced skills in this particular problem domain. Didn’t matter at Big Company (tm). Oh we will throw some juniors in there who will spend five years relearning all the lessons about what not to do.
You are treated way more like a replaceable part with remote work.
After very extensive training that company had, spinning up and everything, I realized my situation was hopeless. I just wasn’t going to “win” regardless of exertion level.
It didn’t help that the team at that company was hyper competitive and ultra hostile to outsiders. Not only was I not included, they went out of their way not to include a certified outsider (tm).
So i quit and joined a startup.
It was the biggest waste of everyone’s time. I think they got next to zero value out if me and wasted a ton of resources training me.
Remote work is career death if your company is not remote first. Kind of trying to sprinkle some remote workers into such a situation doesn’t work. I wasn’t the only one.
Probably a common story. Remote worker versus HQ politics.
You are at a total disadvantage. HQ workers are political and have no interest in helping out some rando new hire remote worker.
So yeah, it was clear how pointless it was.
