When I run vi, I get vim (Linux, macOS, illumos). Only FreeBSD, in my easily ssh'able world, has real Bill Joy (et al) vi.

So you mean i've been using vim this whole time?? Why didn't anyone tell me?

The editor should tell you. If you open vim without any configuration and without opening a file directly, it shows you a welcome screen saying “vim: vi (improved)”.

Telling you now: your /bin/sh is probably bash.
