Tailscale uses wireguard underneath to create the connections. You are directly connecting to your desktop rather than sending your data through them to you. They manage the authentication, secret sharing, NAT traversal etc. for you automatically.
- sergiotapia 4y agoSo to confirm my 60GB _is_ going through their servers at cost to them, yes? I didn't set up port forwarding before installing Tailscale or anything. I know without tailscale I cannot access my Plex server from a remote IP.
- smoldesu 4y agoProbably? I believe Tailscale slows free users down after 1tb of traffic each month, which seems reasonable relative to what other VPSes offer.
- orrrrn 4y agoTraffic goes through their DERP servers if all p2p connections techniques fail. For example Tailscale tries to do UDP hole punching to create direct connections between nodes even if there isn't port forwarding. One of the main reasons behind Tailscale is to do just this, connect nodes directly rather than pushing data through some central hub.
