"One in three-to-four girls, and one in five-to-seven boys, are sexually abused before they turn 18, an overwhelming incidence of which happens within the family. These statistics are well known among industry professionals, who are often quick to add, “and this is a notoriously underreported crime.”"
- simonblack 4y agoBut if those girls and boys are happy to engage in sex, can it truly be called 'sexual abuse'? And what if both the boys and the girls are over 18? And what if the boy and girl are twins and are both 17? This is one of those situations where laws are not able to keep up with the facts on the ground. Incest is mainly a Cultural thing for and against. Don't forget Queen Cleopatra who was 'married' to two (3?) of her brothers in Ancient Egypt.
- rendx 4y agoThe number for "sexual abuse" are about exactly that: abuse, without consent. Additionally, there is plenty of psychological research into it, and there cannot be "consent" of minors. Minors need emotional connection and touch for survival. But not sex. It fucks them up, forever. It is violence. And violence breeds more violence. They only "enjoy it" and "consent" because it is often the only way to emotionally connect with disturbed parents/relatives. It sounds like you didn't read the article. It talks about this, too.
- simonblack 4y agoand there cannot be "consent" of minors. Thank you for confirming my point. The legal age of consent in most states of the US is 16, with one at least being lower, and a few being at 17. So the Age of Consent all over the US is one at which all are minors. If you are correct in that assertion that there cannot be "consent" of minors, then my assertion that laws are not able to keep up with the facts on the ground is being confirmed.

- simonblack 4y agoJudging by the numbers of boys and girls who happily engage in sex under the age of 18, I would say there would be 80% of 'children' who are 'sexually abused' according to your criterion. Average age of loss of virginity appears to be around 17 in most Western countries.
- coldtea 4y agoWhich is neither here, nor there (also not sure what "my criterion" you refer to is). Are you missing the context of incest in this thread, or are you just open to it?
