ESP32-P4: High-Performance MCU with Numerous IOs and Security Features
- therealergo 4y agoExtremely excited to see what we can do with MIPI CSI/DSI, H264 encode, and JPEG encode in a tiny micro like this one. I can definitely see the value in this part
- moloch-hai 4y agoHmm, doesn't say what "instruction set profile" it supports.
- rektide 4y agoIs this Espressif's first core without any wifi or bt? Hopefully it ships. There's a bit of a backlog of cores announced >1 year ago that are still nowhere to be seen. (ex: ESP32-C5 and -C6 with 802.11ax.)
- pifm_guy 4y agoI wonder if perhaps they are having trouble securing manufacturing capacity for analogue chips? By dropping WiFi and BT, they can use a different production process in other foundry's.
- rektide 4y agoI'd guess they're shooting for a higher performance process & that it just doesnt work very well for the analog/rf design a wifi chip might use. Or they're just not experienced yet adapting tbese smaller nodes. I'd love to know what kind of nodes various bits of wifi hardware so use. And what nodes existing (all wireless capable) Espressif chips are on.
- pifm_guy 4y agoMaybe next year we'll see this chip paired with another die in the same package for the analog stuff adding in WiFi, Bluetooth, an ethernet Mac, a 1 watt audio amp, an analog mux, and all the other things to make it a real 'system' on chip.
- rektide 4y agoDont forget about a GB of ram, and maybe some DC-DC converters. ;)

- randyrand 4y agoEspressif is expanding their product line too quickly. note: they decided not to included wifi or bt
- sureglymop 4y agoNot including those is a pretty good "Security feature"
- mardifoufs 4y agoBut isn't espressif's main "value proposition" the included wireless stack?
- c0wb0yc0d3r 4y agoI'm not super in tune with the RISC-V scene, but if a person is working with RISC-V right now, are they also concerned with wireless? I realize that the answer is in a way "yes." But, if you can only choose one, wouldn't someone working with RISC-V be looking at security over Wi-Fi?
- pantalaimon 4y agoESP32-C3 is a RiscV chip with WiFi
- bonzini 4y agoFor ESP8266 and the original ESP32 yes, but there are use cases for wired IoT and they also get to sell 2 chips instead of 1...
- randyrand 4y agoSorry I should have made it clear. My 2 remarks are unrelated to each other. I was just noting it because it's notable.
- reactive001 4y agoI'd imagine they're just going to leverage SDIO and a cheaper ESP32 variant (like a C3) to bring wifi to the chip. Makes sense when you start looking at EMC/EMI with high speed interfaces, adding Wifi just adds another layer to the chaos which might not be needed in a lot of applications
- rowanG077 4y agoNo MII, No bt, No wifi. Bold strategy as those things are what made ESP32 popular.
- elcritch 4y agoIt has Ethernet no? I think this part will be awesome for lots of stuff.

Looks good for PoE cameras where security is important and wireless is an anti-feature due to deauth attacks and insecure radio basebands.
- spookthesunset 4y agoThis stuff just keeps getting cooler and cooler. Wonder what the price point will be on these? Hopefully right in line with the rest of their offerings!
- andrewstuart 4y agoGreat looking chip! Lots of RAM and a DAC, great for VGA. But no wifi?
