hey OP, i'm loving your blog.
I think the idea of "just pick one and get to work" is SO under valued. I often find my own self overwhelmed trying to find the best way to do something, when pretty much every option is good enough. Not only do I burn time, I expend emotional energy (which ends up leading to more burnt time)
This type of problem comes up time and time again in the context of music production. Each choice creates a thousand roads not taken (which vocal take is the best? what bitrate should this audio file be? where exactly should the song start? have i layered too many synthesizers on this? which ones are the extraneous ones? oh god i'm overthinking this, should i just scrap everything and start over?) If i'm not careful, the what-ifs pile up and I never finish the damn song. And nobody cares except me!
To that end, as much as I can, I try to remember and embody the relentless pace of John Dwyer from Thee Oh Sees, who releases like 50 records a year and doesn't let anything in the world slow him down. Oh Sees records are never "perfect" (there may be some technical flubs here and there), but they're always just right. As perfect as anyone would want them to be.
Too many good-enough choices is one of the weird curses of our age. Now if you'll excuse me, i'm gonna go spin up a React app the way I assume John would.
(who am I kidding, it's because I'm too lazy to learn how to use Svelte)
- jakelazaroff 4y agoHey, thanks so much! I really appreciate the kind words :) I'm a musician too and I definitely feel that. "Would this be easier in another DAW?" is a perennial worry in my head.
- slater- 4y agohahaha yeah. man, i killed myself trying to switch from logic to ableton. i eventually gave up trying, now i just pump ableton instruments into logic via rewire so i can use the push controller, and it's a redundant workflow but my soul and my sanity thank me. what software do you use? got any of your tunes online i can hear?
