Amazon is currently generating around $11B in annual net income. They don’t need to lay anyone off.
The idea that it’s customary to temporarily ruin a ton of employee-stakeholder’s lives in order not to save the company but simply to maintain a high rate of capital accruing to the investor-stakeholders is a good example of the casual sociopathy of modern capitalism that emboldens its hard left-wing critics, particularly young people in the United States who have never in their lifetime seen functional institutions, only their social damage.

So it is not really the case that "they don't need to lay anyone off", they have to do something stop the bleeding even the whole company is still making money. Also there is not much Amazon can actually do either, since they actually ran a very efficient the retail business, but the inflation just tips off the balance of its revenue model so much. When politics touch the economy, that's where little locally strategy change can help.
