I don't really understand the uproar in the comments. Socially conservative states should have socially conservative laws (like this). Ditto for liberal states.

If it's unpopular or LA ceases to be socially conservative, democracy will fix it.
- d23 4y ago> I don't really understand the uproar in the comments > If it's unpopular or LA ceases to be socially conservative, democracy will fix it. You don't understand the uproar but argue uproar will fix it?
- slibhb 4y agoSomehow I doubt HN commenters and voters in Louisiana are a similar demographic... My point was that, if you disagree with this law and don't live in Louisiana, your attitude should be "those crazy conservatives!" plus an eyeroll and not "they're trampling our rights!"
- d23 4y agoIt seems like you're making up a strawman. Who here is claiming their rights are being trampled that doesn't live in the state? Also, it is possible to have concern for that which is outside one's own direct interest.
- was_a_dev 4y agoI'd take the argument that's what the electorate voted for. Why else would they vote for a conservative party if they didn't want conservative laws?
- d_e_solomon 4y agoOur system is setup so that the government - even elected via a democratic process - can't trample over certain rights.
- hn_throwaway_99 4y agoI think this law is a dumb idea, but I'm at a loss to think of which rights this law is "trampling" over.
- charonn0 4y agoThe right to privacy, particularly when it comes to sex or your own body.
- noabuseplease 4y agoNo-one is invading your privacy here. If you choose to hand your personal details over to a pornographer, that's on you. You don't have to watch online porn. If you do, any impact to privacy is your own fault.
- charonn0 4y agoWould you feel this way if it were church attendance instead of porn?
- noabuseplease 4y agoWhy would churches be required to record the personal details of everyone who attends?
- charonn0 4y agoWhy would porn sites?
- noabuseplease 4y agoIs that a trick question? We're discussing this on a post about a law that requires ID to be provided to online pornography sites to verify age.
