tl;dr: After detractors suggested that Facebook have structural incentives to spread birdseed content, Facebook tried to prove them wrong — only to discover that they do, in fact, have structural incentives to spread birdseed content.
(personally, I think they're just a symptom of the underlying issue: gamification of US politics [and hence, health] has corroded any notion of centrism)
