Banning TikTok Hurts Higher Education
- smoldesu 4y ago> Yet the panic about TikTok is overblown. > policies and discourse around TikTok in politics amount to a modern-day Red Scare. Did they miss the part where the CCP admitted to using TikTok to track American journalists?
- greggarious 4y agoThe servers are in China, the certificates are controlled by China, and the murder vans that will be used on the sources will also be Chinese. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Execution_van https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Execution_van
- darthrupert 4y agoSo give researchers their privileged route to it. This would not be the first thing banned from the public but allowed for research. What confuses me is, TikTok won't have useful data in it if general public doesn't use it, right? So the researchers won't have any need for it, either.
- parasense 4y agoYeah whatever.... Does anybody seriously believe this nonsense? Did Twitter killing off Vine also hurt academia? Because Vine and TikTok were/are substantially similar. Is the PRC behind this rhetoric, am I being paranoid? There was another PRC/CCP control app a while back, maybe called weechat or whatever, and it was banned because the CCP was reading all the chats sent my outside users... including academics using the app academically or whatever... they all just switched to using SMS or twitter or whatever one-of-a-bazillion other chat apps.
- saargrin 4y agoso it hurts higher education by not allowing professors to reasearch its destructive effects on society? was this piece directly funded by TikTok or did they have the courtesy to pay for it thru an intermediary ?
- nix23 4y agoWired was really good around ~2008, who i responsible for that massive pile of shi* that it is today?
