Why gyms don't work but Superhuman does
- PaulHoule 4y agoI don't think the gym is a great analogy, at least for me. If I go to a new gym I am familiar with 50-100% of the equipment. I might not be making the most of it but I am going to get a lot out of it on day one.
- sw104 4y agoIt's a terrible analogy really. Poor writing. A gym is only unfamiliar if you've never been to a gym before. Almost any gym you go to has the same machines (cardio and weights), dumbbells, barbells, kettle bells etc. Most machines are understandable on first sight (maybe not good form), and even if somebody has never used one, the average person instinctively know how to use, let's say, a chest press machine because they've seen it in TV shows, movies, real life. You'd have to be almost alien to reach an age that would allow you to have a gym membership without having seen these machines used second-hand. I'm sure Superhuman won't be the first email client somebody uses, so they'll likely pick up most of the features based on intuition. Based on that, the analogy doesn't hold up whether you've been to a gym before or not.
- emilieschario 4y agoAuthor here! Just because you know how to use a piece of equipment does not mean you know how to build gym programming (right progression, move safely, etc) and that is the part that makes it hard to continuously go to the gym and feel like you know what to do. You can do lat pull downs all day, but that isn't going to be that effective. Hope that clarifies!
- emilieschario 4y agoAuthor here! Everyone's experience is certainly different, but most people do not actually work out at a gym on a regular basis, so your familiarity is the exception, not the rule! Thanks for reading!
