Why is American chocolate so disgusting? You don’t want to know
- massysett 4y agoI like Hershey chocolate. The ever-so-slight sour note is distinctive.
- bityard 4y agoThe article is sorely lacking any substance from what I can tell (or maybe I hit a paywall halfway through), but I've noticed this as well, and I'm just a dumb American who is not even otherwise particular about sweets. Hershey's is the worst offender but nearly all American-made chocolate just tastes like garage to me. It's bitter (but not in the nice way that dark chocolate is), gritty, overly sweet, and basically completely lacking in flavor. This is especially the true of anything labeled "milk chocolate."
- n1b0m 4y agoI don’t know if this is still true, but I believe part of the reason for it tasting so much worse is they use more vegetable oil rather than cocoa butter
- navjack27 4y agoJust because Hershey's is here in the USA doesn't mean that's all we eat for chocolate lol
- polka_haunts_us 4y agoWhen I was younger I used to watch the late TotalBiscuit's gaming podcast. I remember one episode he was on some anti American chocolate rant and said something to the effect of "I like good European brands, like Ghirardelli". First thing I think of everytime I see this obnoxious whine on the internet.
