For Russian Troops, Cellphone Use Is a Persistent, Lethal Danger
- ggm 4y agoHaving a cellphone on means it's triangulating at layer2 pretty much all the time. If you own a telco you know a lot of geoloc data about that unique cellular device. Three or more towers put you into a weighted centroid of location, one puts you a reasonable radial distance from it. If you strap a picocell to a drone you can probably do layer 2 stuff and sense phones. Or Bluetooth.

- _zzaw 4y agoConsidering this, it seems like mobile phones would be pretty useful decoys to get the Russians to waste ammunition that they're increasingly hard up for. Just set up a few remotely activated cellphones in an unoccupied area, have them place a call, and let the shells fall.
- throwaway4good 4y agoAre the phones of Russian's soldiers connecting to Ukranian controlled telcos? If that is the case, it sounds a bit stupid. Or is the US that provides this information? Getting the location of devices via the services that run Apple Maps or Google Maps or from various social media that US intelligence has access to (TikTok, Youtube etc.).
