On demand learning is more efficient. Sure we'd rather understand the whole field, but we can't know all of every field. Better to learn what you know and go deeper as and when it's clear that you'll need to. If I tried to read full text books on every tech I've used, I'd never get any work done and I doubt I'd retain it all for long without using in anger.
