HTTP Referer has been neutered or deprecated by browsers for privacy reasons.
It used to be easy to scrape logs and automate your own backlink sources. Many of us had implemented backlink publishing automation.
I assume browsers stopped it as a combination of privacy outrage and the fact that it also dovetailed nicely with google being able to slightly increase their moat (they still refer the domain and of course that combined with the fact that they scrape all pages means they can make their own associations but a basic web admin can't get their scrapers allow-listed)
