There was a very cool exhibit at the Baker Library at Harvard way back from the archives of Dun an Bradstreet that showed their 19th century version of a credit check product. It was basically just freeform notes about businesspeople like, "Joe is said to be a man of high moral virtue, though it is said that he is often delayed by family matters," or whatever.
