This evidence adds weight to what I understand to be a common interaction between psychological stress and abdominal wellbeing.
Anecdote++, but in my long term experiences of living with chronic anxiety, social exclusion, depression and mild PTSD, I eventually found myself seeking medical help for various difficult-to-pin-down abdominal issues. It was actually somewhat of a relief to connect the two, and gave greater impetus to make positive changes.
Those quite scary physical experiences (which involved incorrectly, but quite seriously, suspecting cancer etc), and my subsequent reading about the gut biome - also touching on tangents like SSRIs and their effects upon such, and the complex gut endocannabinoid system - highlighted to me what vast unexplored areas and unfilled gaps we have yet to define within this complex area of full-system psychological involvement.
