It's surprising the batteries didn't catch fire, this seems very lucky indeed. I recall back when they added titanium shielding in front of the Model S battery in response to multiple fires caused by hitting road debris. The hazards in dropping off a tall, craggy cliff at speed seems pretty out of scope for those defenses.
