It's an ad-hoc data format with the following design goals: * Security (tightly specified, safe defaults, consistent implementations, future-proof). * Native type support, so you don't need to string encode things (I mean c'mon, it's the 21st century). * Easy to use (no special files or build steps). * Efficient for humans, efficient for machines.
