At my first job out of school we didn't use an ORM and just queried with raw SQL. I had never heard of the N+1 query problem because it wasn't something we really had to worry about. After that I joined a startup that used rails and I had quite the education in ORMs and N+1 queries. The ORM felt quite restricting and I felt a lot less confident in my code.
