Hi, thanks. I have no doubt that there's a lack of understanding... indeed, one big problem is that students come in with poor background in algebra and trigonometry. Certainly I don't handle this perfectly, but I always keep it in mind, and I'm much more explicit about algebraic calculations than I would be if I were confidence the students had mastered algebra.
