The existence of a deep biosphere in particular narrows the habitability gap between our planets to the point where it probably doesn’t exist—there is likely at least one corner of Mars that an Earth organism could call home.
Maybe the next fancy device we send to Mars should be a high-throughput sequencer to look for metagenomic Martian DNA.
