It is all over the United States. Used to the Democratic party stood for some actual values, but the right shifted so far to the extreme now people just vote Democrat because they are less worse than the alternative. That is the only reason Biden got elected.
- mikeyouse 4y agoDo you realize how silly it sounds to the average person to hear the characterization of the party who collectively nominated one of the more boring centrists in history as “extreme”?
- LarryMullins 4y agoThings are changing quick. Parts of Obama's 2008 platform would be considered extreme right-wing today. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_the_2008_United_States_presidential_candidates#Same-sex_marriage https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_the_2008_United_...
- mikeyouse 4y agoAnd? Obama’s 2008 platform was 15 years ago.. the country’s norms and social mores change over time.. are you honestly arguing that it’s “extreme” to unequivocally support gay marriage in 2022 when something like 75% of the country agrees now? https://content.gallup.com/origin/gallupinc/GallupSpaces/Production/Cms/POLL/revzzd9bukmtrwrf6gwpba.png https://content.gallup.com/origin/gallupinc/GallupSpaces/Pro...
- LarryMullins 4y ago> are you honestly arguing [...] No, there's nothing like what you assert in my comment. Kindly respond to what I actually say, not the third order implications of what you think I might be trying to insinuate. > the country’s norms and social mores change over time THAT is what I said. Things change quick.
- AnimalMuppet 4y agoYou are misreading the GP. It claims that the Republicans shifted to the extreme right, not that Democrats shifted extreme left. (But see the sibling comment by LarryMullins - the Democrats did shift, though maybe you could argue that they shifted with society.)
- mikeyouse 4y agoYeah that’s a fair critique of my read.. though “not being extremists” is often an okay platform to stand for when you’re trying to be a big tent party and win national elections.

- stonogo 4y agoNobody said anything about what Biden did after getting elected. The claim was that was why Biden was elected, and I tend to agree with it.

- AnimalMuppet 4y agoThe past 40 years included Reagan, Bush Sr., Clinton, Bush Jr., Obama, and Trump. I don't think there's any way you can look at Biden and say that he was the most effective of that bunch. He could have been. But for some reason, he tried to govern as if he had a huge legislative majority, when in fact he had a 50-50 Senate. As a result, he kept running into a couple of senators that, while they were Democrats, were not on board with what he wanted to do. When that didn't work, he tried to rule by executive order, often on shaky Constitutional ground. What he really needed to do, for the good of the country, was try to find common cause with the opposition, and find stuff that he could get passed 70-30, or at least 60-40. But he didn't. You could argue that stubborn Republicans would have stonewalled him no matter what he proposed, but as far as I can see he never even tried.
- laidoffamazon 4y agoHe literally did. The CHIPs Act and the BIF got bipartisan majorities. As did gun control and codifying marriage equality just last month. Trump couldn’t do infrastructure despite wide support inside and outside the Republican Party and a trifecta. He had two 50-50 large bills, that’s not the extent of his accomplishments.
- laidoffamazon 4y agoBiden won the most votes of any American in history. Second or third in the world excepting Indonesia. This is not something the “least of all evils” get elected.
- lapcat 4y agoUS population has grown, and 2020 turnout was high compared to other recent elections. Trump got more votes in 2020 than Obama did in 2008. 20 million more votes than Reagan's 1984 landslide victory. So would you claim that Trump is more popular than Obama and Reagan? Democrats kept chanting "vote blue no matter who" before the election, then they turn around afterward and claim Biden won because he was so personally popular (a claim never supported by opinion polls), which makes one wonder why they needed to chant "vote blue no matter who" in the first place...
- laidoffamazon 4y agoYou’re confusing a handful of Twitter leftists that had to be coaxed into voting for Biden with the fact that Biden assembled a larger coalition than Obama did in 2012. Biden is and has always been popular among Democrats and he won independents in 2020.
- lapcat 4y ago> Biden assembled a larger coalition than Obama did in 2012. So your answer to my question is yes, you are claiming that Trump is more popular than Obama and Reagan? > Biden is and has always been popular among Democrats and he won independents in 2020. Is that why Biden lost the Democratic nomination 2 times before, in 1988 and 2008? The eligible voting population was 26 million higher in 2020 than in 2008. Moreover, voting by mail rules during the pandemic and a close race (Biden won Georgia, Arizona, and Wisconsin by a combined 43 thousand votes) helped to elevate voter turnout in 2020. 7 states had a margin of victory less than 3%, and Biden won 6 of those. 2020 was an extremely close election. Biden got 7 million more votes than Trump, but that entire margin is accounted for by California and New York, where Biden won 63% and 61% of the vote.
