I remember downloading shareware/freeware Pac-Man clones in the old days, they usually ran on DOS or Windows 3.1.
Some played great, some looked great, but very few of them were "Pac-Man"
The speed was off, the maps weren't the right size, and you notice little things like the ghost AI or how Pac-Man corners.
I started writing my own a long time ago, and although it's simple enough to get the basics right, there are a lot of little things that if you miss, it will just feel like a cheap clone.
This document covers the details on those things, it's great. Some things you can figure out yourself (slowing down when 'eating' pellets, for example) but the AI and cornering is a little tougher.
I give a lot of respect to the pioneers that came up with this 40+ years ago, in such early times of video games.
