I switched to dvorak from querty. At the time, the only typing I did of any length was in chat on Diablo 1. I have never felt so impotent as when I was frantically trying to convey information in game during that early period. Trying to keep up with conversations in the channels was very frustrating. I improved my wpm not by switching to dvorak, but by learning the new layout without looking at the keyboard while I type.
