My biggest concern about the EU is that it is too early to judge. The US is a similar experiment but over time we've seen great political and regional divides. The moment that countries begin to feel EU rules are stepping too far is the moment that things will start to break down. If you avoid the issues of federal overreach that exist in the US and ensure each country fully maintains its own sovereignty then IMO everything will be fine. When the freedom to disagree goes away, tensions will rise though.
