I want to use my phone less. I don’t want to use it at all during idle time. Instead, I’d like to fill that time with reading books, drawing, and journaling. If I can get my phone use to under 2 hours per day, I think I’ll be more mentally healthy.
The area I need to work on the most is phone use before bed. I don’t know how to fall asleep quickly, so I use my phone to kill time until I eventually fall asleep. I think if I can find a way to stop using my phone before bed, I’ll wake up better rested and be able to have more productive days. Yet that first requires me to figure out how to become tired at an appropriate bed time rather than lying around for an hour and a half with a swarm of thoughts.
I sometimes wish I could ditch my phone entirely. However, it’s important for me to have communication paths to message friends, so I need my phone for iMessage.

My past resolutions, which were successful include: losing weight to become fit, giving up meat, and eliminating social media. Hopefully I can make my new resolution successful as well.
- gibspaulding 4y agoReading books instead of the internet before bed has been really good for me. It fills that need for something to wind down with, but isn't as aggressively fighting for your attention. Anecdotally, it seems like reading a book, even on my phone, knocks me out a lot faster than anything online. Congratulations on the success with your previous resolutions, and good luck this year!
- surprisetalk 4y ago> The area I need to work on the most is phone use before bed. For me, I started falling asleep quickly once I chose a home for my phone (downstairs on my kitchen counter). I also discovered I started getting out of bed more quickly too! > I sometimes wish I could ditch my phone entirely. However, it’s important for me to have communication paths to message friends, so I need my phone for iMessage. You might not be able to ditch your phone entirely, but you can get closer! You can get a cellular Apple Watch and leave your phone at home. It sucks to use iMessage on it, but that's kind of the point. It can connect to AirPods for Siri and phonecalls and directions, and that tends to be enough. --- [1] https://taylor.town/phone-home https://taylor.town/phone-home [2] https://taylor.town/extinguish-all-notifications https://taylor.town/extinguish-all-notifications [3] https://taylor.town/leave-your-phone-at-home https://taylor.town/leave-your-phone-at-home
- derwiki 4y agoI was on the “no phone by bed” train until my garage was broken into at 3am and realized I couldn’t quickly call the police.
- baremetal 4y agoYou don't have a means of self-defense in your own house?
- derwiki 4y agoI keep a baseball bat by my bed, but that doesn't mean I'm going to go looking for a fight against two intruders who are armed with who-knows-what. When the cops showed up, they said that if I had called and said "home invasion" they would have been there in a matter of minutes.
- baremetal 4y agowhen seconds count, they are only minutes away.
