I wonder how much market share is taken up by illegal/pirate streams. I haven't paid for a streaming service in years — the price to use one of a few illegal streaming sites is just patience in clicking away popups and knowing which buttons not to press to avoid malware — and I know most if not all of my circle consumes a significant amount of their media this way.
- remote_phone 4y agoAs soon as Netflix blocks my ability to share my account with my sibling, I’m cancelling my account and bittorrenting whatever I want to watch from there. I’m willing to pay fees that have practically doubled over the past few years but I’m not going to pay for 2 accounts when we generally don’t watch at the same time and I probably use Netflix once a week at most.
- motoxpro 4y agoI hear that! I actually started doing the same for my rent. Landlord tried to raise the price so I just stopped paying. Same with food actually. Price of a tomato has gone up too much so I usually take one or two as I leave the store.
- jimmygrapes 4y agoI would never advocate for piracy since it steals from the mouths of impoverished writers and cinematographers and so on, but if I were to play devil's advocate I might say qbittorrent mullvad eztv or nzb and a variety of made up words ending in *arr but again that's not a thing I would ever recommend and you should probably just pay 5 to 15 USD per month to watch the things your friend group talks about when they talk about things
- gryn 4y agoI use Netflix and prime for convenience and I'm willing to pay for that, I haven't given up on the "old ways" but the nice things about Netflix is that you get a taste from the trailers, the recommendation and one major things for me is that you have the choice of dubs and subs in almost all shows whereas in pirate streams well the quality is much much less consistent. basically the value add for me UX and QA of content. that said these legal streaming services have much to improve on. the streaming turf wars is not helping. regional locks are annoying, I've watched netflix and prime shows on pirate sites because they were available there a day or more before they were available in my region ... prime video removing original dubbing for movies I wanted to watch later and keeping only the french dubbed version annoys the hell out of me (though I think that is something the got to do with complying with the french government, but that beg the question as to why netflix doesn't do the same).
