Ask HN: What's the closest you can get to speaking in dialup sounds?
It's nearly 2023, just seems like this trope should be really doable by now.
- h2odragon 4y agoI could once whistle close enough to handshake tones to make 1200 and 2400 baud modems start talking in a 1200 baud mode. There's various audio codecs which can encode arbitrary data. you could hook something like this: https://bellard.org/linmodem/ https://bellard.org/linmodem/ up to whatever microphone and digitization and encoding chain you wanted; just for sheer perversity.
- themodelplumber 4y agoThat's pretty neat! It must have been fun to demonstrate that skill for others. I admit I'm hoping that a certain Daniel Pinkwater story could become real just in terms of having the right hardware in one's mouth.
