The rules vary pretty significantly, with at least one group even permitting the use of grid electricity. The Amish don't have a fundamental problem with technology, but there are two factors that keep them from using a lot of modern conveniences. The first is that they are reluctant to depend on the world outside of the community, and the second is that they are very conservative about anything that might be a threat to their family and community centric way of life or tempt them towards sinfulness. They are more open when it comes to work because it can be kept separate from the home life in a lot of cases, and because not everyone can be a farmer and working with "The English" pretty much requires using our technology.
