Most people I've seen on twitter seem to assume the ChatGPT's political lean reflects that of the "safety" researchers involved. A more cynical take might be that a "lib-left" orientation is the least likely to draw the ire of regulators/investors/employees/activists/the general public, so most companies drift towards it. If there's a published theory on this somewhere I'd love to read it.
