Art as the Overcoming of Death: From Fedorov to the Cosmists of the 1920s (2018)
- marginalia_nu 4y agoRelatedly, this is a neat little encyclopedia of Russian thought I found a while back: https://filosofia.dickinson.edu/encyclopedia/cosmism/ https://filosofia.dickinson.edu/encyclopedia/cosmism/
- hermitcrab 4y ago"Russian cosmism generally asserts an active and optimistic perspective on the transformative impact of human reason on cosmic evolution, whereas Lovecraftian cosmicism is associated with pessimism and nihilism." The current situation in Russia seems much closer to Lovecraftian cosmicism.
- marginalia_nu 4y agoDunno if it's all that different now, a lot of the people involved with russian cosmism would have lived during, or seen at least the end of Stalin's reign when they were young.
- comfypotato 4y agoHad never heard of Cosmism and enjoyed this as an introduction. Wow, human thought and philosophies vary so much! I’m familiar with philosophy in which life is ultimately suffering (not that we can’t make something good out of it) and death is release. Cosmism trends in a very opposite direction. This writing literally labels life as good and death as evil. Would enjoy it if someone could clarify if I’m misinterpreting or oversimplifying anything here.
