A good ol' Jaques of London Staunton set; perfection. I guess it's just conditioning but the Staunton design just looks right to me from every angle. Less is definitely more. The Staunton design gets out of the way. You can see exactly what every piece is and you can concentrate on the game as an abstract pattern of possible moves. When I see some of the flashy novelty designs you can just tell the person that bought it wasn't a player.
