Intel Breaks Up Graphics Group, Raja Koduri Moves Back to Chief Architect Role
- rektide 4y agoI really wish Intel had let this ride for a couple more years. This feels way too soon. The two (HPC/data-center & consumer) are very different products, yes, but I really want to see some interesting synergy & co-reinforcement. It gives me enormously bad feels to see a company with one of the lowest P/E rations in tech abandon one of the most forward-facing most-hopeful efforts to maintain ecosystem relevance so quickly, to let themselves fracture apart like this.
- navjack27 4y agoIt's not shut down though. Did you read?
- rektide 4y agoBeing split up. As I said, I think they should stay together ("synergy & coreinforcement"). My post wasnt entirely clear, for I assumed the reader already had this context.
- jmpman 4y agoIt feels like Intel is run by the lowest quality MBAs. Someone’s spreadsheet doesn’t work out and instead of understanding the core technical competency, they pull the plug. On the reverse side, I’ve had Intel attempt to sell me their accelerator cards and felt like their engineers built a 1000 core processor and went searching for problems it may solve.
- AtlasBarfed 4y agoIsn't this about the third time Intel has gone gung-ho for "serious graphics" and given up? Intel, your company basically exists to sell useful transistor real estate. If you look at the number of transistors in a graphics card vs a CPU, the graphics card has WAY MORE. Intel's inabilty to do graphics has always been the canary in the coal mine for their technical competence. Then again a graphics card is basically a VLIW chip if you squint hard enough, and ... Yeah, I guess it started with Itanium, so is it like four times they've failed at this?
- navjack27 4y agoBut they didn't stop and aren't stopping.
