You don't see the relationship between how long cars last and the depreciation curve?
I thought the connection was more than obvious.
- seanhunter 4y agoI don’t see you as having established anything about that relationship. You just said how you typed something into chatGPT and didn’t like the answer.
- vba616 4y ago"Established"? What is this, my thesis defense? I was soliciting information, or a source for information, for a topic that has been on my mind for years. I've read many a time on HN, a comment about how electric cars are simpler, and I've read about the million mile Tesla, but also about problems with the tech on older cars that are out of support. So I'm genuinely interested in whether Teslas - because I assume among electric cars they should have the most data - last as long as ICE cars before scrappage. If they last half as long, because they stop OTA updates or something physical fails, then that makes a big difference in what they mean to the environment and affordability. ChatGPT was very positive about Tesla and very clearly stated the data is not public. It's very wishy-washy about a lot of topics in a characteristic way, but in this particular case it sounded more engaged, like a PR flack for Tesla. If that reflects the training set, that's interesting, and if that reflects something added explicitly by the developers, that's interesting. >didn’t like the answer. I characterized it uncharitably, but I didn't say I did or didn't like it. I doubt it's true that historical information on the lifespan of Teslas is completely impossible to estimate from public sources, but I didn't have ideas offhand.
