Anyone else work at a large company with a massively complex system that basically controls everything, and a skeleton crew of devs that know how it all works?
- missedthecue 4y agoWait, you have people that know how it works?
- bottlepalm 4y agoWell not exactly, each dev knows their piece of the system. Impossible to understand it all.
- pphysch 4y agoWorking on it. What gives me a kick is the longtime sysadmin in my department who grumbles when I discuss introducing new software because "who will maintain it?" Buddy, no one even understands the current software (except me a little bit)! If I end up leaving a Ball of Mud behind, it is in total compliance with the organization's engineering practices.
- phpisthebest 4y agoI did, then all those people retired now we just have massively complicated system that controls everything....
- csours 4y agohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kh9j1slA7R4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kh9j1slA7R4 (Ralph Wiggum "I'm in danger") Yup.
- luma 4y agoNope, we did but PE bought the outfit and replaced that crew with offshore contractors before selling it off to the next guy. Now nobody knows how it works.
- bmitc 4y agoWhat/who is PE?
- shagie 4y agoIn this context, I suspect Private Equity.
- bmitc 4y agoThank you!
- factsarelolz 4y agoPrivate Equity.
- kirykl 4y agomassively complex and insanely unstable, everything hinging off the long since gone consultant created, Rube Goldberg chain of RPA bots
- Tao3300 4y agoIf my company knew what was good for it, they'd only let the lead dev on my project out in a Popemobile.
- bottlepalm 4y agoHah yes, certain devs shouldn't travel together either.
