Follow up HN: What statup/tech is on your “to watch” list?
There was this post on HN 2.5yrs ago (wow, time flies): https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23276456
Was just looking it over, how come I still haven't heard of most of those startups? This was 3 months after covid, did covid wipe them out or is there not a whole lot of "new" in tech all this time?
- eternityforest 4y ago(Keep in mind I've never picked a stock or anything beyond letting Betterment's AI do everything, these are purely things I watch for curiosity or because I might want to get involved with the tech). * Matter and Thread I don't know if it's a good smarthome standard, but it looks like it will be the smarthome standard, and just having it will be pretty great. * Perfect day foods. They make casein with of modified yeast. Much more interesting than lab grown meat, because plant based meats are good already and plant based cheese is abhorrent slime. Giving up meat is the easy part, it's dairy and leather that are hard. * The various companies making noninvasive biosensors, like Rockley Photonics. Eventually watches will be able to sense blood glucose and other things, and machine learning will tell us how well we are eating and exercising. At the moment fitness and nutrition are kind of scary. You do stuff generally thought to be healthy and... wait a year to see what it did? Am I excercising enough? Have I cut enough sugar? Aside from keeping a healthy weight effects are rather delayed. Realtime feedback would be powerfully motivating and help you do stuff that actually works. Maybe we can even scan for cartilige damage to make sure we don't overdo it. * Jami. Seems to be one of the very most promising P2P apps, and one of the only active modern ones that seems practical. * Solid PODS. Looks like an absolutely wonderful tech for the future of the web, I don't know why it's not constantly swarming with attention. * IPFS. Sadly not now, it hogs 30-120KB of data a second sitting idle and is still based on the insanity of flooding a DHT with every copy of every chunk of every file as the default setting, but it's big and popular and not a blockchain, maybe they will solve the efficiency issues. I hope so, I'm tired of BitTorrent being the only way to share large files practically, it has no partial update feature. But I mostly ignore and check every year or so.
