Reminds me of an old comic: A gas station attendant is filling up a 70s-era gas-guzzler; he yells to the driver: "Better shut off the engine! She's gaining on us!" (I've spent the last 10 minutes searching google images and the New Yorker cartoon bank for this, but can't find it anywhere – does it ring a bell with anyone?)
